A Very Hungry Caterpillar Party

An adorable, little caterpillar who wants to eat everything in his way and turns into a gorgeous butterfly….who doesn’t love this classic Eric Carle story? The colors are vibrant, the simplistic rhythm is beautiful and the tale revolves around yummy food! Party theme? Yes please! It was amazing bringing The Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday theme to life.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday

My sweet girl turned one back in the spring (***cue mommy tears) and a Very Hungry Caterpillar themed party evolved. It was a blast. Not JUST the party (which was amazing) but the preparation was fun. I could get my two-year-old/the big brother involved in some of the preparation. For starters, I designed an online invitation through Canva. Such an amazing way to make personal designs.

Cake, Balloons, Amazing Friends

This party was truly a group effort! Not many people have friends who can whip up a cake like that? My friend Jo is incredibly talented and that is an understatement. Her use of colors and fondant were beautiful. I was amazed. And it was delicious. Yum!

And as a sweet gift, my friend Sandy had her daughter (who is incredibly talented) create Very Hungry Caterpillar cookies. They were delightful.

That balloon caterpillar! My sweet friends, Amber & Ashley went above and beyond to help me pull off the decorations. I love their creativity and willingness to help with anything! Note…always find some amazing helpers if attempting a party with several decorations. It was a good time blowing up a million balloons. Super easy, a bit time consuming and totally worth it.

Dollar Store Decor

DOLLAR TREE. Who needs themed party supplies when you can get everything for $1.00? I was astonished that The Very Hungry Caterpillar themed plates, cups, etc. were insanely expensive. I think this worked out even better. So many colors. And bonus, Dollar Tree had cutout caterpillars and butterflies.

Toddler Activity

Activity table: creating a scene with food. My amazing mother-in-law setup and prepped this adorable, edible activity and the older kids, especially, loved it. Now every time we eat cucumbers at home, Levi wants to make a caterpillar!

Music and Story Time

We hired Daddy as our entertainment! He was Johnny Karate for the day! It was the perfect addition. I was amazed at how all the kids were attentive and happy for several minutes. It tied the whole party together have The Very Hungry Caterpillar story read aloud.

Homemade Dress

And…please notice her homemade dress. Thanks to Sandy, my sewing teacher, who guided me through that detailed process! If you haven’t heard of Spoonflower, it’s amazing. You can order fabric, wallpaper, gift wrapping all with personal designs. I happened to find this unique and whimsical fabric and it worked out exactly as I had hoped.

Big Brother Shirt

The easiest project ever was creating a themed shirt for the big brother. I grabbed a red shirt from the thrift store, some gel fabric markers and voila! He loved it and it was a fun way to make him feel special on a day when little sister was getting extra attention.

DIY Decor for a Low Cost

One of the easiest decorations to make were these centerpieces. I took standard sized cans and wrapped them with The Very Hungry Caterpillar themed fabric I purchased on Amazon (and used hot glue to secure). Then I found a freebie printable on Pinterest of the foods in the story. I printed and laminated those, stuck them on a popsicle stick and stuffed the cans with tissue paper.

Each table also had a random array of felt foods. I used the book for inspiration. It was simple to make and added a pop of color to each table.

Happy Caterpillar

So many smiles. So much fun! I’m so happy that this special day for our sweet caterpillar was possible. Have you ever been to a Very Hungry Caterpillar party? I hope you get to experience one, at least, in your lifetime!
